Barcelona Zoo
Barcelona Zoo is set in a magnificent garden over 100 years old, covering 13 hectares of Ciutadella Park and containing a collection of some 7,500 individual animals belonging to more than 400 species from all over the world, including:
The large collection of primates, all in danger of extinction, with Snowflake the Gorilla as star attraction. He was the only albino gorilla known to exist, and was found in 1966 in what was then Spanish Guinea. He lived with a total of 4 females, all black, and they had many offspring, 5 of which (a male and 4 females) have survived. Nevertheless, the Bornean orangutans are also important - a baby called Jawie was born in 1997 - as is the collection of titis, the world's smallest monkeys, and the small primate house, where there are the grey and collared mangabeys, whose reproduction in captivity is being monitored by our zoologists.
The group of bottlenose dolphins, which have been breeding continually for some years now, and give spectacular performances daily.
The Iberian wolf, a seriously threatened species here; the Zoo is responsible for coordinating its reproduction in captivity throughout Europe.
Within the big cats, endangered species and subspecies such as the Sumatran tiger, the Sri Lanka leopard, the snow leopard and the cheetah.
A large collection of mammals ranging from endangered bovines, such as the bongo and the anoa, to species that are seldom found in captivity such as the tapir, The babirusa and the African hunting dog.
The colony of grey herons, which live in the zoo in complete freedom and have become the largest breeding colony in Catalonia.
The Doņana bird centre, where the most important species of the native fauna are bred in order to help repopulate protected areas in Catalonia.
The aviary, with its representative collection of parrots from all over the world and a number of confiscated birds including Nicobar pigeons and crowned-pigeons, all of which are highly endangered species. After being confiscated, these birds were placed under the protection of the Zoo until the authorities decide on their final destination.
The terrarium, with a varied range of amphibians and reptiles from all over the world; it has over 500 animals belonging to more than 100 species, and is regarded as one of the best in Europe. The animals are kept in specially equipped facilities with abundant vegetation. The various species of python, boas and anacondas, are particularly interesting, as are the several species of crocodilians: the American alligator the broad-snouted caiman, the spectacled caiman, the tomistoma, the dwarf crocodile, the marsh crocodile, the Australian saltwater crocodile and the Nile crocodile. The last of these have an enclosure which enables them to be viewed underwater.
