Gibraltar to Tangier Day Excursion
At the crossroads of civilisation, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic Ocean, Tangier flaunts its magnificent bay below lush green hills. Its strategic position making it a crossroads of two civilisations, Tangier, gateway to the African continent, looks across at Europe from the shores of Atlantic and Mediterranean alike. As a meeting-point of routes to so many different destination, Tangier has inevitably been marked by the passing of History-Phoenicians, Berbers, Portuguese and Spaniards have left their indelible mark on the city.
Tangier is also renowned for the Mendoubia gardens, with their eight-hundred-year-old trees, the Sidi Bouabid Mosque, it is minaret decorated with multi-hued faiences dominating the Medina, the Kasbah Square with is portico of white marble columns, and the great Mechouar where the pashas were once gave audience. The status of international free zone which the city enjoyed for a number of years added to Tangier's celebrity status, and it has since become an obligatory stop-off for any tourist in the search of the real Morocco.
What to see in Tangier:
Grand Socco (a very renamed place du 9 Avril, 1947, very huge and permanent market at the entrance old the old medina).
Petit Socco (A small square, at the Southern entrance of the old city surrounded by cafes and hotels).
Dar El Makhzen ( the former governor's place, now the Moroccan Arts and Antiquities Museum).
